01 · THE SIGN

Why the Goat is the sign of creativity

The Goat is the eighth sign and the softest of the twelve. The Chinese word for it, yang, covers goats, sheep and rams, so English writers use all three names for the same sign. Tradition reads the Goat as the sign of the artist: gentle, imaginative, and more at home with beauty and with people than with conflict.

The Goat's branch, Wei, covers 1 to 3 pm, and its element is Earth. In Chinese astrology Earth is the element of care and of home, and the Goat is read that way: nurturing, sensitive, and dependent on a settled, supportive space to do its best work.

03 · ELEMENTS

The five kinds of Goat

Every Goat carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Goat's earthly branch (Wei) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1991 Goat different from a 2003 Goat, even though both are the same animal.

Wood Goat

2015 · 1955

The Wood Goat is the most generous. Wood adds growth and warmth, so this Goat is warm, cooperative, and creative in a way that includes other people.

Fire Goat

2027 · 1967

The Fire Goat is the most expressive. Fire gives the Goat a voice and a stage, so this Goat is charismatic and passionate. It is also the most sensitive to criticism.

Earth Goat

1979

The Earth Goat is the most stable. Earth on Earth brings patience, practical care, and strong loyalty to home and family.

Metal Goat

1991 · 1931

The Metal Goat is the most disciplined. Metal gives the Goat a sharp eye and firm standards, so this Goat is a perfectionist about its craft.

Water Goat

2003 · 1943

The Water Goat is the most intuitive. Water deepens the Goat's feeling and imagination. It is the Goat that senses what other people need before they ask.

04 · TRAITS

What the tradition says about the Goat

Strengths

  • Creative, with a natural eye for beauty and detail.
  • Gentle and kind, and easy to trust.
  • Empathetic. A Goat feels the mood of a room.
  • Thoughtful, and a generous friend.
  • Adaptable in a calm setting, and a good teammate.

Blind spots

  • Avoids confrontation and lets problems pile up.
  • Anxious under pressure, and slow to decide.
  • Needs reassurance more than it shows.
  • Can lean on other people for direction.
  • Struggles with unstructured, chaotic settings.

05 · COMPATIBILITY

Goat compatibility

The Goat's best matches are Rabbit and Pig (triple harmony) and Horse (secret friend). Ox sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Triple harmonyRabbit and Pig
The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
Secret friendHorse
A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
ClashOx
Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.
HarmRat
Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
PenaltyDog
Old habits rub against each other. It works with patience.
No special tieTiger, Dragon, Snake, Monkey and Rooster
No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.

06 · 2026 AND 2027

The Goat in 2026 and 2027

2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.

2026

Fire Horse year

Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.

2027

Fire Goat year

2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.

How a Fire year meets each kind of Goat

Wood Goat
Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Goat is generous to a fault. Keep something for yourself.
Fire Goat
Fire meets Fire. The Fire Goat is expressive and sensitive to criticism. Pick the audience.
Earth Goat
Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Goat is well supported. A settled home helps most.
Metal Goat
Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Goat's perfectionism feels pressed. Finish before polishing.
Water Goat
Water meets Fire head on. The Water Goat feels what others need and can overextend. Rest first.

Your Annual Report

A Goat year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

08 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What years are Goat years?

2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967, 1955, 1943, 1931. Each Goat year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.

What element is the Goat?

Every Goat carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Goat's earthly branch (Wei) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1991 Goat different from a 2003 Goat, even though both are the same animal.

Who is the Goat compatible with?

Rabbit and Pig are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Horse is the secret friend. Ox is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Is it the Year of the Goat, Sheep or Ram?

All three. The Chinese word for the animal, yang, covers goats, sheep and rams, and English writers use all three names. Goat is the most common name in astrology, and it is the same sign.

Is the Goat a weak sign?

The Goat's strength is gentleness: imagination, empathy, and a gift for making things beautiful. The tradition names its weak points as indecision and a need for a stable setting, and it does not rank the Goat below any other sign.

How do I know if I am a Goat?

Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.

Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?

It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
