Why 2003 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 1, 2003 in 2003. So the people born in 2003 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2003 to January 31, 2003 | Water Horse | 2002 (壬午) |
| February 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003 | Water Goat | 2003 (癸未) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 2003 is on a Saturday, February 1, 2003, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 15, 2003. The Water Goat year lasts 355 days, until January 21, 2004. The same sign and element came round in 1943 and come round again in 2063. A 2003 birthday turns 23 in 2026 and 24 in 2027. Before it came the Water Horse year, from February 12, 2002. After it comes the Wood Monkey year, from January 22, 2004.

What sets 2003 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 2002. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 2003, 12 days earlier, so the Water Goat year opens in Aquarius season.
31 days of 2003, from January 1 to January 31, 2003, still belong to the Water Horse year. The other 334 belong to the Water Goat.
Chinese New Year came 3 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 3 days, from February 1, 2003 to February 3, 2003, the Chinese calendar counts a Water Goat where a Five Elements chart still counts a Water Horse.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Water adds to the Goat
The Water Goat is the most intuitive. Water deepens the Goat's feeling and imagination. It is the Goat that senses what other people need before they ask. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Water and the Goat's own branch is Earth. Earth controls Water in the cycle, so the animal holds the element in check. Traditionally that reads as a Goat whose nature keeps the Water in line.
Every Goat year has a different element, so a Water Goat is not the same as the other Goats. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Goat guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Goat year before this one was 1991, a Metal Goat year that began on February 15, 1991. Chinese New Year was 14 days later then, and the element moved on from Metal to Water. The Goat year after this one was 2015, a Wood Goat year that began on February 19, 2015. Chinese New Year was 18 days later then, and the element then moved on from Water to Wood.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 2015 (Wood Goat), 2027 (Fire Goat), 2039 (Earth Goat), 2051 (Metal Goat), 2063 (Water Goat).
04 · THE SIGN
The Goat behind the Water
The Goat's best matches are Rabbit and Pig (triple harmony) and Horse (secret friend). Ox sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Water Goat
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Water Goat, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. 2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
