Why 1979 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 28, 1979 in 1979. So the people born in 1979 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1979 to January 27, 1979 | Earth Horse | 1978 (戊午) |
| January 28, 1979 to December 31, 1979 | Earth Goat | 1979 (己未) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1979 is on a Sunday, January 28, 1979, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 11, 1979. The Earth Goat year lasts 384 days, until February 15, 1980. The same sign and element came round in 1919 and come round again in 2039. A 1979 birthday turns 47 in 2026 and 48 in 2027. Before it came the Earth Horse year, from February 7, 1978. After it comes the Metal Monkey year, from February 16, 1980. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.

What sets 1979 apart
Chinese New Year came 10 days earlier on the calendar than in 1978. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1979, 7 days earlier, so the Earth Goat year opens in Aquarius season.
27 days of 1979, from January 1 to January 27, 1979, still belong to the Earth Horse year. The other 338 belong to the Earth Goat.
Chinese New Year came 7 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 7 days, from January 28, 1979 to February 3, 1979, the Chinese calendar counts an Earth Goat where a Five Elements chart still counts an Earth Horse.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Earth adds to the Goat
The Earth Goat is the most stable. Earth on Earth brings patience, practical care, and strong loyalty to home and family. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Earth and the Goat's own branch is Earth. Same element on both layers, so this Earth Goat is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Goat year has a different element, so an Earth Goat is not the same as the other Goats. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Goat guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Goat year before this one was 1967, a Fire Goat year that began on February 9, 1967. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Fire to Earth. The Goat year after this one was 1991, a Metal Goat year that began on February 15, 1991. Chinese New Year was 18 days later then, and the element then moved on from Earth to Metal.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1991 (Metal Goat), 2003 (Water Goat), 2015 (Wood Goat), 2027 (Fire Goat), 2039 (Earth Goat).
04 · THE SIGN
The Goat behind the Earth
The Goat's best matches are Rabbit and Pig (triple harmony) and Horse (secret friend). Ox sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for an Earth Goat
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to an Earth Goat, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. 2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
