Chinese zodiac Rat
The first sign of the zodiac: every Rat year, five kinds of Rat, and who it pairs with.
Rat
01 · THE SIGN
Why the Rat comes first
The Rat opens the wheel, and the story of the great race explains why. The twelve animals ran for their places, and the Rat climbed onto the Ox's back, then jumped off just before the finish line to arrive first. Chinese astrology has kept the Rat in front ever since. The sign carries that reputation: quick, resourceful, and always one move ahead.
The Rat's branch, Zi, also marks the start of the day. It covers 11 pm to 1 am, the hour when one day turns into the next. A sign that begins things, that notices openings before anyone else does, and that does not wait to be invited: that is the Rat as the tradition draws it.

02 · YEARS
Every Rat year
You are a Rat if you were born in one of these Chinese years. Each starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Born in January or February? Check the start date for your year. The other eleven animals are on the Chinese zodiac overview.
03 · ELEMENTS
The five kinds of Rat
Every Rat carries two elements. The sign itself is Water, fixed, because the Rat's earthly branch (Zi) belongs to Water. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1984 Rat different from a 1996 Rat, even though both are the same animal.
Wood Rat
1984 · 1924
The Wood Rat is the connector. Wood gives the Rat's cleverness a warm, generous side, so this is the Rat that builds networks and draws people in. The risk is saying yes to too many things at once.
Fire Rat
1996 · 1936
The Fire Rat is the boldest. Fire adds heat and speed to a sign that already moves fast, so expect big ideas, strong opinions, and a short fuse when the plan is blocked. It needs a stage and a deadline.
Earth Rat
2008 · 1948
The Earth Rat is the planner. Earth slows the Rat down just enough to finish what it starts. This is the Rat that saves, organises, and makes the quick idea last.
Metal Rat
2020 · 1960
The Metal Rat is the sharpest. Metal adds precision and a hard edge, so this Rat sees the weak point in any plan, its own included. It is a formidable negotiator and a demanding one.
Water Rat
1972
The Water Rat is the deepest. Water doubles the Rat's own element, which means intuition, memory, and a talent for reading what people leave unsaid. It is the most private of the five and the hardest to surprise.
04 · TRAITS
What the tradition says about the Rat
Strengths
- Spots opportunities early and acts on them.
- Adapts to a new setting faster than almost any other sign.
- Reads people accurately, often within minutes.
- Resourceful when options run low. A Rat finds a third way.
- Charming without effort, and a very good friend once trust is built.
Blind spots
- Keeps score quietly and remembers it for a long time.
- Restless. A finished plan loses its appeal fast.
- Holds back the full story, even from people who are close.
- Worries more than it admits.
- Can be critical of other people's slower pace.
05 · COMPATIBILITY
Rat compatibility
The Rat's best matches are Dragon and Monkey (triple harmony) and Ox (secret friend). Horse sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
- Triple harmonyDragon and Monkey

- Secret friendOx
- A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
- ClashHorse

- HarmGoat
- Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
- PenaltyRabbit

- No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.
06 · 2026 AND 2027
The Rat in 2026 and 2027
2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.
2026
Fire Horse year
The Rat sits directly opposite the Horse on the wheel, the traditional clash, and Chinese astrology says the Rat offends the year's Tai Sui in 2026. The tradition reads a year of movement: changes of work, home or routine that you did not plan. The customary advice is to keep red close, keep commitments modest, and not force big changes before they are ready.
2027
Fire Goat year
Rat and Goat are a harm pair, a quieter friction than a clash. Expect small misunderstandings, delays, and people who let you down on detail rather than on the big promise. It is a year to put things in writing, check the figures twice, and keep friendships in repair.
How a Fire year meets each kind of Rat
- Wood Rat
- Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Rat gives more than it gets back. Spend energy as you would money.
- Fire Rat
- Fire meets Fire. The Fire Rat is bold and quick, and a Fire year can burn it out. Schedule rest.
- Earth Rat
- Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Rat is supported. Steady work shows results this year.
- Metal Rat
- Fire melts Metal, which puts pressure on the Metal Rat's sharp plans. Stay flexible.
- Water Rat
- Water meets Fire head on. The Water Rat is pulled between caution and pace. Calm is the skill.

Your Annual Report
A Rat year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

08 · FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What years are Rat years?
2020, 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948, 1936, 1924. Each Rat year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.
What element is the Rat?
Every Rat carries two elements. The sign itself is Water, fixed, because the Rat's earthly branch (Zi) belongs to Water. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1984 Rat different from a 1996 Rat, even though both are the same animal.
Who is the Rat compatible with?
Dragon and Monkey are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Ox is the secret friend. Horse is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
Why is the Rat the first zodiac animal?
In the story of the great race, the Rat rode on the Ox's back and jumped ahead at the finish to arrive first. It is a folk tale, not a historical record, but it is the one the tradition tells to explain the order of the wheel.
Is the Rat a good sign?
Every sign has its own strengths and its own hard years. The Rat's reputation is for cleverness, quick reading of people, and a talent for starting things. The tradition also names its weak points: restlessness and a habit of keeping things back.
How do I know if I am a Rat?
Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.
Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?
It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
