Chinese zodiac Tiger
The third sign and the fiercest: every Tiger year, five kinds of Tiger, and who it pairs with.
Tiger
01 · THE SIGN
Why the Tiger is the king
In Chinese culture the Tiger is the king of the beasts. The markings on its forehead resemble the character for king, 王, and the animal has long stood for courage and for protection against bad luck. Children's tiger-head hats and shoes are a traditional custom for exactly that reason. The zodiac gives it third place, and the sign carries the same weight: brave, direct, and hard to ignore.
The Tiger's branch is Yin, and it covers 3 to 5 am, the last stretch before dawn. The tradition reads the Tiger as a sign of first moves: it acts when the room is still deciding. It is generous with those it protects and difficult for those who cross it.

02 · YEARS
Every Tiger year
You are a Tiger if you were born in one of these Chinese years. Each starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Born in January or February? Check the start date for your year. The other eleven animals are on the Chinese zodiac overview.
03 · ELEMENTS
The five kinds of Tiger
Every Tiger carries two elements. The sign itself is Wood, fixed, because the Tiger's earthly branch (Yin) belongs to Wood. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1986 Tiger different from a 1998 Tiger, even though both are the same animal.
Wood Tiger
1974
The Wood Tiger is the most generous. Wood on Wood means growth and warmth: this is the Tiger that gathers a team and leads from the front. It can stretch itself across too many fronts.
Fire Tiger
1986 · 1926
The Fire Tiger is the most dramatic. Fire feeds a sign that is already bold, so expect charisma, big gestures, and very little patience for waiting. It is magnetic and hard to steer.
Earth Tiger
1998 · 1938
The Earth Tiger is the most grounded. Earth steadies the Tiger's impulses and adds a practical streak, so this Tiger plans the leap before taking it. It is also the quietest of the five.
Metal Tiger
2010 · 1950
The Metal Tiger is the most uncompromising. Metal adds a hard edge and a clear standard, so this Tiger is decisive, demanding, and fearless in an argument. It rarely backs down.
Water Tiger
2022 · 1962
The Water Tiger is the most strategic. Water cools the Tiger's heat into patience and timing. It watches, waits for the moment, then moves with full force.
04 · TRAITS
What the tradition says about the Tiger
Strengths
- Courageous. A Tiger steps in when others hold back.
- Natural authority that people accept without being told to.
- Generous and protective with friends and family.
- Decisive under pressure, and clear about what it wants.
- Draws attention without trying.
Blind spots
- Impatient with slow processes and slow people.
- Reacts first and reconsiders later.
- Hates being told what to do.
- Takes risks that others would call unnecessary.
- Struggles to accept advice, especially unasked.
05 · COMPATIBILITY
Tiger compatibility
The Tiger's best matches are Horse and Dog (triple harmony) and Pig (secret friend). Monkey sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
- Triple harmonyHorse and Dog
- The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
- Secret friendPig
- A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
- ClashMonkey
- Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.
- HarmSnake
- Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
- No special tieRat, Ox, Rabbit, Dragon, Goat and Rooster
- No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.
06 · 2026 AND 2027
The Tiger in 2026 and 2027
2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.
2026
Fire Horse year
Tiger and Horse form a triple harmony with the Dog, the strongest tie on the wheel, and the Tiger's Wood feeds the Horse's Fire. Tradition reads 2026 as a year of momentum for the Tiger: partnerships click, travel opens up, and bold moves land better than usual. The risk is overreach, because a tailwind makes it easy to take on too much.
2027
Fire Goat year
Tiger and Goat have no special tie, so the Goat year reads as neutral, and in the cycle of control the Tiger's Wood sits above the Goat's Earth. The year gives way to effort rather than luck: a Tiger that plans and keeps going makes visible progress. It rewards patience more than the boldness the sign prefers.
How a Fire year meets each kind of Tiger
- Wood Tiger
- Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Tiger runs at full power and spends fast. Pace the effort.
- Fire Tiger
- Fire meets Fire. The Fire Tiger is at its loudest. Aim the heat before it aims itself.
- Earth Tiger
- Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Tiger is supported. Plan the leap, then take it.
- Metal Tiger
- Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Tiger's firm stance is tested. Choose the argument that matters.
- Water Tiger
- Water meets Fire head on. The Water Tiger's patience is an advantage. Wait for the moment.

Your Annual Report
A Tiger year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

Frequently asked questions
What years are Tiger years?
2022, 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, 1926. Each Tiger year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.
What element is the Tiger?
Every Tiger carries two elements. The sign itself is Wood, fixed, because the Tiger's earthly branch (Yin) belongs to Wood. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1986 Tiger different from a 1998 Tiger, even though both are the same animal.
Who is the Tiger compatible with?
Horse and Dog are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Pig is the secret friend. Monkey is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
Why is the Tiger called the king of the beasts?
The stripes on a tiger's forehead look like the Chinese character 王, which means king. That image, together with the animal's strength, made the Tiger a symbol of power and protection in Chinese folk culture.
Is the Tiger a lucky sign?
No sign is luckier than another. The Tiger's tradition is one of courage, protection, and bold action, and it also carries a warning about impulsiveness. Each of the twelve has its strong years and its hard ones.
How do I know if I am a Tiger?
Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.
Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?
It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
