Why 1943 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 5, 1943 in 1943. So the people born in 1943 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1943 to February 4, 1943 | Water Horse | 1942 (壬午) |
| February 5, 1943 to December 31, 1943 | Water Goat | 1943 (癸未) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1943 is on a Friday, February 5, 1943, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 19, 1943. The Water Goat year lasts 354 days, until January 24, 1944. The same sign and element came round in 1883 and come round again in 2003. A 1943 birthday turns 83 in 2026 and 84 in 2027. Before it came the Water Horse year, from February 15, 1942. After it comes the Wood Monkey year, from January 25, 1944.

What sets 1943 apart
Chinese New Year came 10 days earlier on the calendar than in 1942. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1943, 15 days earlier, so the Water Goat year opens in Aquarius season.
35 days of 1943, from January 1 to February 4, 1943, still belong to the Water Horse year. The other 330 belong to the Water Goat.
Chinese New Year came 1 day after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For that one day, February 4, 1943, the Chinese calendar still counts a Water Horse where a Five Elements chart already counts a Water Goat.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Water adds to the Goat
The Water Goat is the most intuitive. Water deepens the Goat's feeling and imagination. It is the Goat that senses what other people need before they ask. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Water and the Goat's own branch is Earth. Earth controls Water in the cycle, so the animal holds the element in check. Traditionally that reads as a Goat whose nature keeps the Water in line.
Every Goat year has a different element, so a Water Goat is not the same as the other Goats. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Goat guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Goat year before this one was 1931, a Metal Goat year that began on February 17, 1931. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Metal to Water. The Goat year after this one was 1955, a Wood Goat year that began on January 24, 1955. Chinese New Year was 12 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Water to Wood.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1955 (Wood Goat), 1967 (Fire Goat), 1979 (Earth Goat), 1991 (Metal Goat), 2003 (Water Goat).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Water Goat
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Water Goat, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. 2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
