Chinese zodiac Horse
The seventh sign and the freest: every Horse year, five kinds of Horse, and who it pairs with.
Horse
01 · THE SIGN
Why the Horse is the sign of freedom
The Horse sits seventh, at the top of the wheel's second half, and it stands for speed, stamina, and independence. In Chinese culture the horse is a partner in travel and in war, and the saying 马到成功, success on the arrival of the horse, has been wished on new ventures for centuries. The sign carries that forward motion: it wants a destination and does not like to be held.
The Horse's branch, Wu, covers 11 am to 1 pm, noon, the moment the sun is highest. Its element is Fire. Tradition reads the Horse as the sign of open air and open roads: warm, honest, energetic, and uncomfortable in a small, fixed space.

02 · YEARS
Every Horse year
You are a Horse if you were born in one of these Chinese years. Each starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Born in January or February? Check the start date for your year. The other eleven animals are on the Chinese zodiac overview.
03 · ELEMENTS
The five kinds of Horse
Every Horse carries two elements. The sign itself is Fire, fixed, because the Horse's earthly branch (Wu) belongs to Fire. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1990 Horse different from a 2002 Horse, even though both are the same animal.
Wood Horse
2014 · 1954
The Wood Horse is the most sociable. Wood adds growth and generosity, so this Horse brings people along. It is optimistic, warm, and spreads itself across many plans.
Fire Horse
2026 · 1966
The Fire Horse is the most intense. Fire on Fire doubles the heat, which means charisma, speed, and a temper that arrives fast. It is bold, independent, and not easily directed.
Earth Horse
1978
The Earth Horse is the most reliable. Earth steadies the Horse's pace, so this Horse follows through. It is practical, loyal, and the most patient of the five.
Metal Horse
1990 · 1930
The Metal Horse is the most determined. Metal adds focus and discipline, so this Horse goes after a goal in a straight line. It is fiercely independent and does not take direction well.
Water Horse
2002 · 1942
The Water Horse is the most adaptable. Water cools the Horse's heat into flexibility, so this Horse reads the terrain and changes course without losing speed. It is more thoughtful than it looks.
04 · TRAITS
What the tradition says about the Horse
Strengths
- Energetic, with stamina for a long road.
- Honest and direct. A Horse says what it means.
- Warm and sociable, and quick to make friends.
- Independent, and good at starting without being told.
- Optimistic, and quick to bounce back.
Blind spots
- Restless. Routine wears the Horse down fast.
- Impatient with detail and with slow conversations.
- Speaks before thinking, and regrets it later.
- Struggles to commit when commitment feels like a cage.
- Takes on more than the schedule can hold.
05 · COMPATIBILITY
Horse compatibility
The Horse's best matches are Tiger and Dog (triple harmony) and Goat (secret friend). Rat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
- Triple harmonyTiger and Dog
- The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
- Secret friendGoat
- A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
- ClashRat
- Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.
- HarmOx
- Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
- BreakRabbit
- Good plans can slip through small gaps. Check the details together.
- No special tieDragon, Snake, Monkey, Rooster and Pig

06 · 2026 AND 2027
The Horse in 2026 and 2027
2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.
2026
Fire Horse year
2026 is the Horse's own year, ben ming nian, the year in which the animal returns. Tradition calls it a year that runs hot and asks for care: big changes feel closer, and so do big opportunities. The custom is to wear red, keep habits steady, and avoid sudden large moves. It is a reason for care, not a sign of bad luck.
2027
Fire Goat year
Horse and Goat are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2027 as the gentler year after 2026: help arrives from people close to you, tension eases, and work feels less like a push. It is a good year to settle what the Fire Horse year shook loose.
How a Fire year meets each kind of Horse
- Wood Horse
- Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Horse is energised and overcommits. Pick a few roads.
- Fire Horse
- Fire meets Fire. The Fire Horse is at its boldest, in its own year. Keep a steady routine.
- Earth Horse
- Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Horse is supported. Follow-through comes easily.
- Metal Horse
- Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Horse's straight line meets obstacles. Bend, then continue.
- Water Horse
- Water meets Fire head on. The Water Horse is the most adaptable. Change course without slowing.

Your Annual Report
A Horse year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

Frequently asked questions
What years are Horse years?
2026, 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, 1942, 1930. Each Horse year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.
What element is the Horse?
Every Horse carries two elements. The sign itself is Fire, fixed, because the Horse's earthly branch (Wu) belongs to Fire. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1990 Horse different from a 2002 Horse, even though both are the same animal.
Who is the Horse compatible with?
Tiger and Dog are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Goat is the secret friend. Rat is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
Is the Fire Horse unlucky?
No. In Chinese astrology the Fire Horse is the most intense of the five Horses: bold, independent, and hard to direct. 2026 is a Fire Horse year, and it is also the Horse's own sign year (ben ming nian), which tradition says asks for extra care. The custom is to wear red and avoid sudden big moves, and it is a reason for care, not a sign of bad luck.
Is the Horse the sign of freedom?
That is how tradition draws it. The Horse stands for travel, speed, and independence, and the sign is described as honest, warm, and uneasy in a fixed routine.
How do I know if I am a Horse?
Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.
Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?
It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
