Chinese zodiac Ox
The second sign and the steadiest: every Ox year, five kinds of Ox, and who it pairs with.
Ox
01 · THE SIGN
Why the Ox is the sign of effort
For most of Chinese history the Ox was the animal that made farming possible. It pulled the plough, it worked the same field season after season, and a family's harvest depended on it. The zodiac gives the Ox second place, right behind the Rat, and the tradition reads the sign accordingly: patient, strong, and unshowy.
In the great race the Ox was the one carrying the Rat across the river, only to be beaten at the line. Whatever you make of that story, it matches the sign's reputation: it does the heavy lifting and rarely asks for the credit. The Ox's branch, Chou, covers 1 to 3 am, the deepest part of the night.

02 · YEARS
Every Ox year
You are an Ox if you were born in one of these Chinese years. Each starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Born in January or February? Check the start date for your year. The other eleven animals are on the Chinese zodiac overview.
03 · ELEMENTS
The five kinds of Ox
Every Ox carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Ox's earthly branch (Chou) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1985 Ox different from a 1997 Ox, even though both are the same animal.
Wood Ox
1985 · 1925
The Wood Ox is the most open-handed. Wood loosens the Ox's firm grip and adds growth, so this Ox mentors, teaches, and carries a group. The risk is taking on other people's loads as well as its own.
Fire Ox
1997 · 1937
The Fire Ox is the most driven. Fire puts a flame under the Ox's patience, so expect ambition, a strong voice, and a temper that builds slowly and arrives all at once.
Earth Ox
2009 · 1949
The Earth Ox is the most solid of the five. Earth on Earth means calm, consistency, and a very high tolerance for hard, repetitive work. It is also the most stubborn.
Metal Ox
2021 · 1961
The Metal Ox is the most exacting. Metal adds discipline and a firm standard, so this Ox holds itself and its work to a line that is rarely crossed. It is reliable to the point of rigidity.
Water Ox
1973
The Water Ox is the most flexible. Water softens the Ox's edges and adds a thoughtful, listening side. It is the Ox that reconsiders, and the one most likely to be underestimated.
04 · TRAITS
What the tradition says about the Ox
Strengths
- Reliable. When an Ox says it will be done, it is done.
- Stamina for long projects that wear other people out.
- Honest and direct, with little patience for spin.
- Steady under pressure, and calming to be around.
- Loyal to people, to promises, and to routines that work.
Blind spots
- Slow to change course, even when the evidence is in.
- Holds a grudge longer than it admits.
- Finds it hard to ask for help or to rest.
- Can be rigid about how a thing should be done.
- Keeps feelings inside until they come out as a refusal.
05 · COMPATIBILITY
Ox compatibility
The Ox's best matches are Snake and Rooster (triple harmony) and Rat (secret friend). Goat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

- HarmHorse

06 · 2026 AND 2027
The Ox in 2026 and 2027
2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.
2026
Fire Horse year
Ox and Horse are a harm pair, the old tie of two signs that wear each other down. Tradition reads a year of friction at close range, with family, partners or colleagues, more than a year of outside shocks. Patience is the Ox's best tool, and so is saying early what bothers you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Ox and Goat sit opposite each other on the wheel, the traditional clash, and the Ox offends the Tai Sui in 2027. The tradition marks it as a year to move carefully: big commitments, new directions and long journeys are better weighed twice. Red is the customary protection, and a steady routine is the Ox's own.
How a Fire year meets each kind of Ox
- Wood Ox
- Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Ox carries other people's load as well as its own. Say no to some of it.
- Fire Ox
- Fire meets Fire. The Fire Ox has a temper that builds slowly. Channel the heat into work, not arguments.
- Earth Ox
- Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Ox is well supported. Slow, steady effort pays.
- Metal Ox
- Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Ox's high standards meet resistance. Soften a rule, keep the aim.
- Water Ox
- Water meets Fire head on. The Water Ox keeps its patience and wins by outlasting the heat.

Your Annual Report
A Ox year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

Frequently asked questions
What years are Ox years?
2021, 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949, 1937, 1925. Each Ox year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.
What element is the Ox?
Every Ox carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Ox's earthly branch (Chou) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1985 Ox different from a 1997 Ox, even though both are the same animal.
Who is the Ox compatible with?
Snake and Rooster are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Rat is the secret friend. Goat is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
Why does the Ox have such a strong work-ethic reputation?
The Ox was the working animal of Chinese farming, so tradition reads the sign through that image: strength, patience, and steady effort over a long season. It is a cultural association, and it has shaped how the sign has been described for centuries.
What is the Ox's best match?
The Rat is the Ox's secret friend, and the Snake and Rooster make up its triple harmony. The Goat sits opposite the Ox on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie is read from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
How do I know if I am an Ox?
Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.
Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?
It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
