Why 1991 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 15, 1991 in 1991. So the people born in 1991 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1991 to February 14, 1991 | Metal Horse | 1990 (庚午) |
| February 15, 1991 to December 31, 1991 | Metal Goat | 1991 (辛未) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1991 is on a Friday, February 15, 1991, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 1, 1991. The Metal Goat year lasts 354 days, until February 3, 1992. The same sign and element came round in 1931 and come round again in 2051. A 1991 birthday turns 35 in 2026 and 36 in 2027. Before it came the Metal Horse year, from January 27, 1990. After it comes the Water Monkey year, from February 4, 1992.

What sets 1991 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 1990. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1991, 26 days earlier, so the Metal Goat year opens in Aquarius season.
45 days of 1991, from January 1 to February 14, 1991, still belong to the Metal Horse year. The other 320 belong to the Metal Goat.
Chinese New Year came 11 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 11 days, from February 4, 1991 to February 14, 1991, the Chinese calendar still counts a Metal Horse where a Five Elements chart already counts a Metal Goat.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Metal adds to the Goat
The Metal Goat is the most disciplined. Metal gives the Goat a sharp eye and firm standards, so this Goat is a perfectionist about its craft. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Metal and the Goat's own branch is Earth. Earth feeds Metal in the cycle, so the animal supports the year's element. Traditionally that is the easier mix: the sign backs the element.
Every Goat year has a different element, so a Metal Goat is not the same as the other Goats. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Goat guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Goat year before this one was 1979, an Earth Goat year that began on January 28, 1979. Chinese New Year was 18 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Earth to Metal. The Goat year after this one was 2003, a Water Goat year that began on February 1, 2003. Chinese New Year was 14 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Metal to Water.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 2003 (Water Goat), 2015 (Wood Goat), 2027 (Fire Goat), 2039 (Earth Goat), 2051 (Metal Goat).
04 · THE SIGN
The Goat behind the Metal

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Metal Goat
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Metal Goat, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. 2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
