01 · THE SIGN

Why the Dog is the sign of loyalty

The Dog is the eleventh sign, and its meaning is the easiest to read: faithful, protective, and honest. In Chinese culture the dog guards the home, and the sign has the same job in the zodiac. A Dog is the one who notices when something is wrong, speaks plainly about it, and stays when others leave.

The Dog's branch, Xu, covers 7 to 9 pm, the evening, when the household comes home and the guard takes its post. Its element is Earth, the element of stability. The tradition reads the Dog as a sign of principle: fair-minded, direct, and uneasy about injustice.

03 · ELEMENTS

The five kinds of Dog

Every Dog carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Dog's earthly branch (Xu) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1994 Dog different from a 2006 Dog, even though both are the same animal.

Wood Dog

1994 · 1934

The Wood Dog is the most generous. Wood adds growth and warmth, so this Dog is open-hearted, social, and quick to help. It gives more than it keeps.

Fire Dog

2006 · 1946

The Fire Dog is the most passionate. Fire gives the Dog heat and a strong voice, so this Dog fights for what it believes in. It is brave, loud, and fiercely loyal.

Earth Dog

2018 · 1958

The Earth Dog is the most steadfast. Earth on Earth means patience, calm, and a strong sense of duty. It is dependable, and it is stubborn.

Metal Dog

2030 · 1970

The Metal Dog is the most principled. Metal adds discipline and firm standards, so this Dog holds to its code and expects others to do the same.

Water Dog

1982

The Water Dog is the most empathetic. Water adds intuition and flexibility, so this Dog listens as well as it guards. It is the Dog that senses a problem before it is said.

04 · TRAITS

What the tradition says about the Dog

Strengths

  • Loyal to people, to causes, and to promises.
  • Honest and fair. A Dog tells the truth, even an unwelcome one.
  • Protective, and quick to step in when someone needs it.
  • Dependable, and the person others call in a crisis.
  • Sensitive to injustice, and willing to act on it.

Blind spots

  • Anxious. A Dog worries about what could go wrong.
  • Distrustful of new people until they have proved themselves.
  • Sees the problem first and can sound critical.
  • Stubborn once it has made up its mind.
  • Takes it personally when loyalty is not returned.

05 · COMPATIBILITY

Dog compatibility

The Dog's best matches are Tiger and Horse (triple harmony) and Rabbit (secret friend). Dragon sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Triple harmonyTiger and Horse
The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
Secret friendRabbit
A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
ClashDragon
Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.

Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
PenaltyOx and Goat
Old habits rub against each other. It works with patience.

No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.

06 · 2026 AND 2027

The Dog in 2026 and 2027

2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.

2026

Fire Horse year

Dog and Horse form a triple harmony with the Tiger, one of the strongest ties on the wheel. Tradition reads 2026 as a year of loyalty returned: friends step forward, partnerships work, and a long-held plan gets a tailwind. It is a good year to trust people you have been guarding against.

2027

Fire Goat year

Dog and Goat form both a penalty tie, with the Ox, and a break tie. Tradition reads a year of friction in the details: contracts, commitments and promises need care, and a Dog that is quick to defend itself can make a small issue larger. Choose your fights, keep records, and let old matters rest.

How a Fire year meets each kind of Dog

Wood Dog
Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Dog helps everyone and tires. Keep a reserve.
Fire Dog
Fire meets Fire. The Fire Dog fights hard for its beliefs. Choose the cause with care.
Earth Dog
Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Dog is supported. Duty and routine work in your favour.
Metal Dog
Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Dog's strict code meets friction. Let one rule bend.
Water Dog
Water meets Fire head on. The Water Dog listens before it guards. That calm settles the room.

Your Annual Report

A Dog year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. 08 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What years are Dog years?

2030, 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946, 1934. Each Dog year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.

What element is the Dog?

Every Dog carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Dog's earthly branch (Xu) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1994 Dog different from a 2006 Dog, even though both are the same animal.

Who is the Dog compatible with?

Tiger and Horse are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Rabbit is the secret friend. Dragon is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Is the Dog a faithful sign in love?

Faithfulness is the sign's central image. Tradition reads the Dog as loyal and honest in relationships, with a tendency to worry and a slow trust of new people.

Why does the Dog come second to last?

In the story of the great race the Dog finished eleventh. In some versions that was because it stopped to play in the water along the way. It is a folk tale, and it does not rank the Dog below any other sign.

How do I know if I am a Dog?

Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.

Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?

It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
