Why 1955 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 24, 1955 in 1955. So the people born in 1955 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1955 to January 23, 1955 | Wood Horse | 1954 (甲午) |
| January 24, 1955 to December 31, 1955 | Wood Goat | 1955 (乙未) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1955 is on a Monday, January 24, 1955, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 7, 1955. The Wood Goat year lasts 384 days, until February 11, 1956. The same sign and element came round in 1895 and come round again in 2015. A 1955 birthday turns 71 in 2026 and 72 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Horse year, from February 3, 1954. After it comes the Fire Monkey year, from February 12, 1956. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.

What sets 1955 apart
Chinese New Year came 10 days earlier on the calendar than in 1954. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1955, 3 days earlier, so the Wood Goat year opens in Aquarius season.
23 days of 1955, from January 1 to January 23, 1955, still belong to the Wood Horse year. The other 342 belong to the Wood Goat.
Chinese New Year came 11 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 11 days, from January 24, 1955 to February 3, 1955, the Chinese calendar counts a Wood Goat where a Five Elements chart still counts a Wood Horse.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Wood adds to the Goat
The Wood Goat is the most generous. Wood adds growth and warmth, so this Goat is warm, cooperative, and creative in a way that includes other people. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Wood and the Goat's own branch is Earth. Wood controls Earth in the cycle, so the element presses on the animal. Traditionally that reads as a wood-driven Goat that pushes against its own nature.
Every Goat year has a different element, so a Wood Goat is not the same as the other Goats. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Goat guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Goat year before this one was 1943, a Water Goat year that began on February 5, 1943. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Water to Wood. The Goat year after this one was 1967, a Fire Goat year that began on February 9, 1967. Chinese New Year was 16 days later then, and the element then moved on from Wood to Fire.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1967 (Fire Goat), 1979 (Earth Goat), 1991 (Metal Goat), 2003 (Water Goat), 2015 (Wood Goat).
04 · THE SIGN
The Goat behind the Wood
The Goat's best matches are Rabbit and Pig (triple harmony) and Horse (secret friend). Ox sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Wood Goat
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Wood Goat, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Goat and Horse are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2026 as a supportive year for the Goat: people offer help, colleagues are warmer, and plans find an ally. It is a good year to ask for what you need.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. 2027 is the Goat's own year, ben ming nian. Tradition says own years run hot and ask for care, and the Goat also forms a penalty tie with the Ox and the Dog. The custom is to wear red, keep routines steady, and avoid sudden big moves. Take it as a reason to look after yourself, not as a warning.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
