01 · THE SIGN

Why the Snake is the sign of depth

The Snake sits sixth on the wheel, right after the Dragon, and in Chinese folk speech it is sometimes called the little dragon. That closeness matters. The Snake shares the Dragon's sense of mystery without its scale: where the Dragon enters a room, the Snake is already in it, watching. The tradition reads the sign as wise, composed, and slow to reveal itself.

The Snake's branch, Si, covers 9 to 11 am, and its element is Fire. A sign with Fire at its core and a cool surface is a good description of how Snakes are read: calm outside, intense inside, and very exact about what they let show.

03 · ELEMENTS

The five kinds of Snake

Every Snake carries two elements. The sign itself is Fire, fixed, because the Snake's earthly branch (Si) belongs to Fire. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1989 Snake different from a 2001 Snake, even though both are the same animal.

Wood Snake

2025 · 1965

The Wood Snake is the most graceful. Wood adds warmth and creativity, so this Snake is artistic, charming, and better at friendship than the sign's reputation suggests.

Fire Snake

1977

The Fire Snake is the most intense. Fire on Fire means ambition, drive, and strong feelings under a composed face. It is the Snake most likely to go all in.

Earth Snake

1989 · 1929

The Earth Snake is the most patient. Earth adds steadiness, so this Snake builds slowly and finishes. It is practical, thorough, and very hard to rush.

Metal Snake

2001 · 1941

The Metal Snake is the most strategic. Metal adds precision and a cool head, so this Snake sees the whole board and plays the long game. It is a strong planner and a hard bargain.

Water Snake

2013 · 1953

The Water Snake is the most perceptive. Water deepens the Snake's instinct for what is unspoken. It is the Snake that reads people best and gives away least.

04 · TRAITS

What the tradition says about the Snake

Strengths

  • Perceptive. A Snake notices what everyone else misses.
  • Composed under pressure, with a calm that steadies others.
  • Strategic, patient, and good at long games.
  • Elegant in manner, and careful with words.
  • Wise about timing, and knows when not to act.

Blind spots

  • Guarded. People can find the Snake hard to read, and sometimes hard to reach.
  • Jealous in private, even when it looks relaxed.
  • Slow to trust, and slower to forgive.
  • Overthinks, and holds on to a plan past its time.
  • Keeps its own counsel when it should ask for help.

05 · COMPATIBILITY

Snake compatibility

The Snake's best matches are Ox and Rooster (triple harmony) and Monkey (secret friend). Pig sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Triple harmonyOx and Rooster
The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
Secret friendMonkey
A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
ClashPig
Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.
HarmTiger
Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
No special tieRat, Rabbit, Dragon, Horse, Goat and Dog
No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.

06 · 2026 AND 2027

The Snake in 2026 and 2027

2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.

2026

Fire Horse year

Snake and Horse have no special tie, but both are Fire signs, so the year doubles the Snake's own element. Tradition reads heat and drive: ambition runs high, so does the temper, and the Snake that stays composed gets the most from it. It suits bold work done quietly.

2027

Fire Goat year

Snake and Goat have no special tie, and the Goat's Earth is fed by the Snake's Fire, which gives it a supportive tone. Tradition reads a smoother year than 2026: the Snake can rest, think, and choose a direction without pressure. It is a good year for study and for repairing relationships.

How a Fire year meets each kind of Snake

Wood Snake
Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Snake gives freely and runs low. Say yes to less.
Fire Snake
Fire meets Fire. The Fire Snake is at its most intense. Stay composed, and the heat works for you.
Earth Snake
Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Snake is supported. Patient building shows up.
Metal Snake
Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Snake's cool plan is tested. Adapt the strategy, not the aim.
Water Snake
Water meets Fire head on. The Water Snake reads the tension and says little. Use that.

A Snake year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. 08 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What years are Snake years?

2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953, 1941, 1929. Each Snake year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.

What element is the Snake?

Every Snake carries two elements. The sign itself is Fire, fixed, because the Snake's earthly branch (Si) belongs to Fire. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1989 Snake different from a 2001 Snake, even though both are the same animal.

Who is the Snake compatible with?

Ox and Rooster are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Monkey is the secret friend. Pig is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.

Is the Snake an unlucky sign?

No. In Chinese culture the Snake is associated with wisdom, grace, and its link to the Dragon, and it is not read as a sign of bad luck. Every sign has its own strengths and its own hard years.

Why is the Snake called the little dragon?

In Chinese folk language the snake is sometimes called the little dragon, because the two animals share a long, sinuous shape and a place of respect. The Snake comes right after the Dragon on the zodiac wheel, which helps keep that link.

How do I know if I am a Snake?

Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.

Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?

It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
