Chinese zodiac Dragon
The fifth sign and the only mythical one: every Dragon year, five kinds of Dragon, and who it pairs with.

01 · THE SIGN
Why the Dragon stands apart
Eleven of the twelve zodiac animals are creatures you can meet. The Dragon is not one of them. In Chinese culture it is a water spirit that brings rain, and for centuries it was the emblem of the emperor. Chinese astrology gives it the fifth place on the wheel, between the Rabbit and the Snake.
That weight carries into how the sign is read. A Dragon is the sign tradition associates with scale: big openings, big ambitions, and people who expect to be noticed. Dragon years are famously the years many families choose to have a child.

02 · YEARS
Every Dragon year
You are a Dragon if you were born in one of these Chinese years. Each starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Born in January or February? Check the start date for your year. The other eleven animals are on the Chinese zodiac overview.
03 · ELEMENTS
The five kinds of Dragon
Every Dragon carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Dragon's earthly branch (Chen) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1988 Dragon different from a 2000 Dragon, even though both are the same animal.
Wood Dragon
2024 · 1964
The Wood Dragon is the builder. Wood gives the Dragon growth and generosity, so this is the Dragon that gathers people and projects around it. The risk is spreading wide before the roots are down.
Fire Dragon
1976
The Fire Dragon is the loudest of the five. Fire doubles the heat the Dragon already has, so expect charisma, speed, and a temper that arrives fast and leaves fast. It does best with a stage and worst when it is made to wait.
Earth Dragon
1988 · 1928
The Earth Dragon is the steadiest. The Dragon's own branch is Earth, so an Earth year stacks Earth on Earth: patient, practical, and more interested in results than applause. This is the Dragon that actually finishes the thing.
Metal Dragon
2000 · 1940
The Metal Dragon is the sharpest. Metal adds discipline and a high standard, so this Dragon is exacting with itself and with everyone else. It is formidable when the goal is clear and brittle when it is not.
Water Dragon
2012 · 1952
The Water Dragon is the most adaptable. Water turns the Dragon's force into strategy: it reads the room, waits for the current, then moves. It is the Dragon most likely to be underestimated, once.
04 · TRAITS
What the tradition says about the Dragon
Strengths
- Sets the pace. People follow a Dragon without being asked.
- Thinks big, and carries other people along with that scale.
- Generous with time, credit, and resources once trust is there.
- Steadier as the stakes rise. Pressure sharpens the Dragon.
- Magnetic. A Dragon enters a room and the room notices.
Blind spots
- Expects the same scale from everyone else.
- Hates being ignored, and it shows.
- Takes on more than one person can carry.
- Slow to ask for help, because asking feels like losing standing.
- Impatient with detail, and with people who need it explained twice.
05 · COMPATIBILITY
Dragon compatibility
The Dragon's best matches are Rat and Monkey (triple harmony) and Rooster (secret friend). Dog sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash. Every tie below comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
- Triple harmonyRat and Monkey
- The strongest traditional match. You want the same things and move at the same speed.
- Secret friendRooster
- A balancing pair. Each one fills in what the other lacks.
- ClashDog
- Opposite on the wheel. Strong pull and plenty of friction.
- HarmRabbit
- Small misreadings that add up. Say things out loud.
- BreakOx
- Good plans can slip through small gaps. Check the details together.
- No special tieTiger, Snake, Horse, Goat and Pig
- No special tie in either direction. The two people matter more than the signs.
06 · 2026 AND 2027
The Dragon in 2026 and 2027
2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 a Fire Goat year. Both carry Fire, so the animal sets the tone and the element sets the pace.
2026
Fire Horse year
Dragon and Horse have no special tie, so the year reads as neutral. The Horse's Fire feeds the Dragon's own Earth, which supports the sign. Tradition reads a steady, productive year: the Dragon sets the pace and the year does not get in the way.
2027
Fire Goat year
Dragon and Goat have no special tie, and the year's Fire feeds the Dragon's own Earth. Tradition reads 2027 as a calm year for the Dragon, good for finishing what was started in 2026. Large moves go better when they are patient ones.
How a Fire year meets each kind of Dragon
- Wood Dragon
- Wood feeds Fire, so the Wood Dragon gives more energy than it gets back. Pace yourself.
- Fire Dragon
- Fire meets Fire. The Fire Dragon is at its loudest and most magnetic. Say less and let it carry.
- Earth Dragon
- Fire feeds Earth, so the Earth Dragon is supported. This is the year it finishes the thing.
- Metal Dragon
- Fire melts Metal, so the Metal Dragon's exacting standard meets heat. Ease off the details.
- Water Dragon
- Water meets Fire head on. The Water Dragon turns force into strategy and waits for the current.

Your Annual Report
A Dragon year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.

Frequently asked questions
What years are Dragon years?
2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940, 1928. Each Dragon year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so a January or February birthday may belong to the animal before.
What element is the Dragon?
Every Dragon carries two elements. The sign itself is Earth, fixed, because the Dragon's earthly branch (Chen) belongs to Earth. The year then adds a second element, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That second element is what makes a 1988 Dragon different from a 2000 Dragon, even though both are the same animal.
Who is the Dragon compatible with?
Rat and Monkey are in the same triple harmony, the strongest traditional match. Rooster is the secret friend. Dog is the traditional clash. Each tie comes from where the two animals sit on the zodiac wheel.
Is the Dragon the luckiest sign?
The Dragon is the most prestigious sign, and no sign is luckier than another. Each of the twelve has its own strengths and its own hard years. The Dragon's reputation comes from what the creature means in Chinese culture: power, rain, and the emperor.
Why is the Dragon the only mythical animal in the zodiac?
The wheel mixes household animals, wild animals, and one legend. The Dragon earned its place because it was already central to Chinese culture, as a rain-bringing water spirit and the emblem of the throne. In the story of the great race, the Dragon finished fifth because it stopped to help others along the way.
How do I know if I am a Dragon?
Use your Chinese year, not your calendar year. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year: before it, you belong to the animal of the year before. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site does the check for you.
Where does the Chinese zodiac come from?
It is one of the oldest ways people have kept time. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were already counting days on Shang dynasty oracle bones more than 3,000 years ago. The earliest written pairings of the twelve branches with animals appear on bamboo slips from the Qin dynasty, over 2,200 years old. Stems and branches together make a 60-year cycle, and the twelve-animal wheel travelled across East Asia, where Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for a Cat. Legend gives it a story: the Jade Emperor called a great race, and the Rat won by riding on the Ox's back, which is why the Rat opens the wheel. It is a living tradition, read here as a mirror for reflection.
