Why 1961 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 15, 1961 in 1961. So the people born in 1961 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1961 to February 14, 1961 | Metal Rat | 1960 (庚子) |
| February 15, 1961 to December 31, 1961 | Metal Ox | 1961 (辛丑) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1961 is on a Wednesday, February 15, 1961, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 1, 1961. The Metal Ox year lasts 355 days, until February 4, 1962. The same sign and element came round in 1901 and come round again in 2021. A 1961 birthday turns 65 in 2026 and 66 in 2027. Before it came the Metal Rat year, from January 28, 1960. After it comes the Water Tiger year, from February 5, 1962.

What sets 1961 apart
Chinese New Year came 18 days later on the calendar than in 1960. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1961, 26 days earlier, so the Metal Ox year opens in Aquarius season.
45 days of 1961, from January 1 to February 14, 1961, still belong to the Metal Rat year. The other 320 belong to the Metal Ox.
Chinese New Year came 11 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 11 days, from February 4, 1961 to February 14, 1961, the Chinese calendar still counts a Metal Rat where a Five Elements chart already counts a Metal Ox.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Metal adds to the Ox
The Metal Ox is the most exacting. Metal adds discipline and a firm standard, so this Ox holds itself and its work to a line that is rarely crossed. It is reliable to the point of rigidity. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Metal and the Ox's own branch is Earth. Earth feeds Metal in the cycle, so the animal supports the year's element. Traditionally that is the easier mix: the sign backs the element.
Every Ox year has a different element, so a Metal Ox is not the same as the other Oxs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Ox guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Ox year before this one was 1949, an Earth Ox year that began on January 29, 1949. Chinese New Year was 17 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Earth to Metal. The Ox year after this one was 1973, a Water Ox year that began on February 3, 1973. Chinese New Year was 12 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Metal to Water.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1973 (Water Ox), 1985 (Wood Ox), 1997 (Fire Ox), 2009 (Earth Ox), 2021 (Metal Ox).
04 · THE SIGN
The Ox behind the Metal
The Ox's best matches are Snake and Rooster (triple harmony) and Rat (secret friend). Goat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Metal Ox
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Metal Ox, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Ox and Horse are a harm pair, the old tie of two signs that wear each other down. Tradition reads a year of friction at close range, with family, partners or colleagues, more than a year of outside shocks. Patience is the Ox's best tool, and so is saying early what bothers you.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Ox and Goat sit opposite each other on the wheel, the traditional clash, and the Ox offends the Tai Sui in 2027. The tradition marks it as a year to move carefully: big commitments, new directions and long journeys are better weighed twice. Red is the customary protection, and a steady routine is the Ox's own.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
