Why 2009 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 26, 2009 in 2009. So the people born in 2009 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2009 to January 25, 2009 | Earth Rat | 2008 (ζε) |
| January 26, 2009 to December 31, 2009 | Earth Ox | 2009 (ε·±δΈ) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 2009 is on a Monday, January 26, 2009, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 9, 2009. The Earth Ox year lasts 384 days, until February 13, 2010. The same sign and element came round in 1949 and come round again in 2069. A 2009 birthday turns 17 in 2026 and 18 in 2027. Before it came the Earth Rat year, from February 7, 2008. After it comes the Metal Tiger year, from February 14, 2010. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.
02 Β· THIS YEAR
What sets 2009 apart
Chinese New Year came 12 days earlier on the calendar than in 2008. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 2009, 6 days earlier, so the Earth Ox year opens in Aquarius season.
25 days of 2009, from January 1 to January 25, 2009, still belong to the Earth Rat year. The other 340 belong to the Earth Ox.
Chinese New Year came 9 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 9 days, from January 26, 2009 to February 3, 2009, the Chinese calendar counts an Earth Ox where a Five Elements chart still counts an Earth Rat.
03 Β· ELEMENT
What the Earth adds to the Ox
The Earth Ox is the most solid of the five. Earth on Earth means calm, consistency, and a very high tolerance for hard, repetitive work. It is also the most stubborn. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Earth and the Ox's own branch is Earth. Same element on both layers, so this Earth Ox is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Ox year has a different element, so an Earth Ox is not the same as the other Oxs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Ox guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Ox year before this one was 1997, a Fire Ox year that began on February 7, 1997. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Fire to Earth. The Ox year after this one was 2021, a Metal Ox year that began on February 12, 2021. Chinese New Year was 17 days later then, and the element then moved on from Earth to Metal.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 2021 (Metal Ox), 2033 (Water Ox), 2045 (Wood Ox), 2057 (Fire Ox), 2069 (Earth Ox).
04 Β· THE SIGN
The Ox behind the Earth
The Ox's best matches are Snake and Rooster (triple harmony) and Rat (secret friend). Goat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

05 Β· 2026 AND 2027
What 2026 and 2027 mean for an Earth Ox
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to an Earth Ox, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Ox and Horse are a harm pair, the old tie of two signs that wear each other down. Tradition reads a year of friction at close range, with family, partners or colleagues, more than a year of outside shocks. Patience is the Ox's best tool, and so is saying early what bothers you.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Ox and Goat sit opposite each other on the wheel, the traditional clash, and the Ox offends the Tai Sui in 2027. The tradition marks it as a year to move carefully: big commitments, new directions and long journeys are better weighed twice. Red is the customary protection, and a steady routine is the Ox's own.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
