Why 1985 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 20, 1985 in 1985. So the people born in 1985 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1985 to February 19, 1985 | Wood Rat | 1984 (甲子) |
| February 20, 1985 to December 31, 1985 | Wood Ox | 1985 (乙丑) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1985 is on a Wednesday, February 20, 1985, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 6, 1985. The Wood Ox year lasts 354 days, until February 8, 1986. The same sign and element came round in 1925 and come round again in 2045. A 1985 birthday turns 41 in 2026 and 42 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Rat year, from February 2, 1984. After it comes the Fire Tiger year, from February 9, 1986.

What sets 1985 apart
Chinese New Year came 18 days later on the calendar than in 1984. The Sun entered Pisces on February 19, 1985, 1 day earlier, so the Wood Ox year opens in Pisces season.
50 days of 1985, from January 1 to February 19, 1985, still belong to the Wood Rat year. The other 315 belong to the Wood Ox.
Chinese New Year came 16 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 16 days, from February 4, 1985 to February 19, 1985, the Chinese calendar still counts a Wood Rat where a Five Elements chart already counts a Wood Ox.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Wood adds to the Ox
The Wood Ox is the most open-handed. Wood loosens the Ox's firm grip and adds growth, so this Ox mentors, teaches, and carries a group. The risk is taking on other people's loads as well as its own. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Wood and the Ox's own branch is Earth. Wood controls Earth in the cycle, so the element presses on the animal. Traditionally that reads as a wood-driven Ox that pushes against its own nature.
Every Ox year has a different element, so a Wood Ox is not the same as the other Oxs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Ox guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Ox year before this one was 1973, a Water Ox year that began on February 3, 1973. Chinese New Year was 17 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Water to Wood. The Ox year after this one was 1997, a Fire Ox year that began on February 7, 1997. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Wood to Fire.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1997 (Fire Ox), 2009 (Earth Ox), 2021 (Metal Ox), 2033 (Water Ox), 2045 (Wood Ox).
04 · THE SIGN
The Ox behind the Wood
The Ox's best matches are Snake and Rooster (triple harmony) and Rat (secret friend). Goat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Wood Ox
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Wood Ox, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Ox and Horse are a harm pair, the old tie of two signs that wear each other down. Tradition reads a year of friction at close range, with family, partners or colleagues, more than a year of outside shocks. Patience is the Ox's best tool, and so is saying early what bothers you.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Ox and Goat sit opposite each other on the wheel, the traditional clash, and the Ox offends the Tai Sui in 2027. The tradition marks it as a year to move carefully: big commitments, new directions and long journeys are better weighed twice. Red is the customary protection, and a steady routine is the Ox's own.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
