Why 1937 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 11, 1937 in 1937. So the people born in 1937 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1937 to February 10, 1937 | Fire Rat | 1936 (丙子) |
| February 11, 1937 to December 31, 1937 | Fire Ox | 1937 (丁丑) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1937 is on a Thursday, February 11, 1937, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 25, 1937. The Fire Ox year lasts 354 days, until January 30, 1938. The same sign and element came round in 1877 and come round again in 1997. A 1937 birthday turns 89 in 2026 and 90 in 2027. Before it came the Fire Rat year, from January 24, 1936. After it comes the Earth Tiger year, from January 31, 1938.

What sets 1937 apart
Chinese New Year came 18 days later on the calendar than in 1936. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1937, 22 days earlier, so the Fire Ox year opens in Aquarius season.
41 days of 1937, from January 1 to February 10, 1937, still belong to the Fire Rat year. The other 324 belong to the Fire Ox.
Chinese New Year came 7 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 7 days, from February 4, 1937 to February 10, 1937, the Chinese calendar still counts a Fire Rat where a Five Elements chart already counts a Fire Ox.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Fire adds to the Ox
The Fire Ox is the most driven. Fire puts a flame under the Ox's patience, so expect ambition, a strong voice, and a temper that builds slowly and arrives all at once. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Fire and the Ox's own branch is Earth. Fire feeds Earth in the cycle, so the element gives its energy to the animal. Traditionally that reads as generous and sometimes tiring: the element spends itself on the sign.
Every Ox year has a different element, so a Fire Ox is not the same as the other Oxs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Ox guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Ox year before this one was 1925, a Wood Ox year that began on January 24, 1925. Chinese New Year was 18 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Wood to Fire. The Ox year after this one was 1949, an Earth Ox year that began on January 29, 1949. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Fire to Earth.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1949 (Earth Ox), 1961 (Metal Ox), 1973 (Water Ox), 1985 (Wood Ox), 1997 (Fire Ox).
04 · THE SIGN
The Ox behind the Fire
The Ox's best matches are Snake and Rooster (triple harmony) and Rat (secret friend). Goat sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Fire Ox
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Fire Ox, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Ox and Horse are a harm pair, the old tie of two signs that wear each other down. Tradition reads a year of friction at close range, with family, partners or colleagues, more than a year of outside shocks. Patience is the Ox's best tool, and so is saying early what bothers you.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Ox and Goat sit opposite each other on the wheel, the traditional clash, and the Ox offends the Tai Sui in 2027. The tradition marks it as a year to move carefully: big commitments, new directions and long journeys are better weighed twice. Red is the customary protection, and a steady routine is the Ox's own.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
