Why 1942 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 15, 1942 in 1942. So the people born in 1942 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1942 to February 14, 1942 | Metal Snake | 1941 (辛巳) |
| February 15, 1942 to December 31, 1942 | Water Horse | 1942 (壬午) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1942 is on a Sunday, February 15, 1942, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 1, 1942. The Water Horse year lasts 355 days, until February 4, 1943. The same sign and element came round in 1882 and come round again in 2002. A 1942 birthday turns 84 in 2026 and 85 in 2027. Before it came the Metal Snake year, from January 27, 1941. After it comes the Water Goat year, from February 5, 1943.

What sets 1942 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 1941. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1942, 25 days earlier, so the Water Horse year opens in Aquarius season.
45 days of 1942, from January 1 to February 14, 1942, still belong to the Metal Snake year. The other 320 belong to the Water Horse.
Chinese New Year came 11 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 11 days, from February 4, 1942 to February 14, 1942, the Chinese calendar still counts a Metal Snake where a Five Elements chart already counts a Water Horse.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Water adds to the Horse
The Water Horse is the most adaptable. Water cools the Horse's heat into flexibility, so this Horse reads the terrain and changes course without losing speed. It is more thoughtful than it looks. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Water and the Horse's own branch is Fire. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so the element presses on the animal. Traditionally that reads as a water-driven Horse that pushes against its own nature.
Every Horse year has a different element, so a Water Horse is not the same as the other Horses. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Horse guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Horse year before this one was 1930, a Metal Horse year that began on January 30, 1930. Chinese New Year was 16 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Metal to Water. The Horse year after this one was 1954, a Wood Horse year that began on February 3, 1954. Chinese New Year was 12 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Water to Wood.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1954 (Wood Horse), 1966 (Fire Horse), 1978 (Earth Horse), 1990 (Metal Horse), 2002 (Water Horse).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Water Horse
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Water Horse, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. 2026 is the Horse's own year, ben ming nian, the year in which the animal returns. Tradition calls it a year that runs hot and asks for care: big changes feel closer, and so do big opportunities. The custom is to wear red, keep habits steady, and avoid sudden large moves. It is a reason for care, not a sign of bad luck.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Horse and Goat are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2027 as the gentler year after 2026: help arrives from people close to you, tension eases, and work feels less like a push. It is a good year to settle what the Fire Horse year shook loose.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
