Why 1966 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 21, 1966 in 1966. So the people born in 1966 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1966 to January 20, 1966 | Wood Snake | 1965 (乙巳) |
| January 21, 1966 to December 31, 1966 | Fire Horse | 1966 (丙午) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1966 is on a Friday, January 21, 1966, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 4, 1966. The Fire Horse year lasts 384 days, until February 8, 1967. The same sign and element came round in 1906 and come round again in 2026. A 1966 birthday turns 60 in 2026 and 61 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Snake year, from February 2, 1965. After it comes the Fire Goat year, from February 9, 1967. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.

What sets 1966 apart
Chinese New Year came 12 days earlier on the calendar than in 1965. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1966, 1 day earlier, so the Fire Horse year opens in Aquarius season.
20 days of 1966, from January 1 to January 20, 1966, still belong to the Wood Snake year. The other 345 belong to the Fire Horse.
Chinese New Year came 14 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 14 days, from January 21, 1966 to February 3, 1966, the Chinese calendar counts a Fire Horse where a Five Elements chart still counts a Wood Snake.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Fire adds to the Horse
The Fire Horse is the most intense. Fire on Fire doubles the heat, which means charisma, speed, and a temper that arrives fast. It is bold, independent, and not easily directed. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Fire and the Horse's own branch is Fire. Same element on both layers, so this Fire Horse is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Horse year has a different element, so a Fire Horse is not the same as the other Horses. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Horse guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Horse year before this one was 1954, a Wood Horse year that began on February 3, 1954. Chinese New Year was 13 days later then, and the element moved on from Wood to Fire. The Horse year after this one was 1978, an Earth Horse year that began on February 7, 1978. Chinese New Year was 17 days later then, and the element then moved on from Fire to Earth.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1978 (Earth Horse), 1990 (Metal Horse), 2002 (Water Horse), 2014 (Wood Horse), 2026 (Fire Horse).

The Horse behind the Fire

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Fire Horse
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Fire Horse, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. 2026 is the Horse's own year, ben ming nian, the year in which the animal returns. Tradition calls it a year that runs hot and asks for care: big changes feel closer, and so do big opportunities. The custom is to wear red, keep habits steady, and avoid sudden large moves. It is a reason for care, not a sign of bad luck.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Horse and Goat are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2027 as the gentler year after 2026: help arrives from people close to you, tension eases, and work feels less like a push. It is a good year to settle what the Fire Horse year shook loose.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
