Why 1990 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 27, 1990 in 1990. So the people born in 1990 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1990 to January 26, 1990 | Earth Snake | 1989 (己巳) |
| January 27, 1990 to December 31, 1990 | Metal Horse | 1990 (庚午) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1990 is on a Saturday, January 27, 1990, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 10, 1990. The Metal Horse year lasts 384 days, until February 14, 1991. The same sign and element came round in 1930 and come round again in 2050. A 1990 birthday turns 36 in 2026 and 37 in 2027. Before it came the Earth Snake year, from February 6, 1989. After it comes the Metal Goat year, from February 15, 1991. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.
02 · THIS YEAR
What sets 1990 apart
Chinese New Year came 10 days earlier on the calendar than in 1989. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1990, 7 days earlier, so the Metal Horse year opens in Aquarius season.
26 days of 1990, from January 1 to January 26, 1990, still belong to the Earth Snake year. The other 339 belong to the Metal Horse.
Chinese New Year came 8 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 8 days, from January 27, 1990 to February 3, 1990, the Chinese calendar counts a Metal Horse where a Five Elements chart still counts an Earth Snake.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Metal adds to the Horse
The Metal Horse is the most determined. Metal adds focus and discipline, so this Horse goes after a goal in a straight line. It is fiercely independent and does not take direction well. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Metal and the Horse's own branch is Fire. Fire controls Metal in the cycle, so the animal holds the element in check. Traditionally that reads as a Horse whose nature keeps the Metal in line.
Every Horse year has a different element, so a Metal Horse is not the same as the other Horses. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Horse guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Horse year before this one was 1978, an Earth Horse year that began on February 7, 1978. Chinese New Year was 11 days later then, and the element moved on from Earth to Metal. The Horse year after this one was 2002, a Water Horse year that began on February 12, 2002. Chinese New Year was 16 days later then, and the element then moved on from Metal to Water.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 2002 (Water Horse), 2014 (Wood Horse), 2026 (Fire Horse), 2038 (Earth Horse), 2050 (Metal Horse).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Metal Horse
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Metal Horse, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. 2026 is the Horse's own year, ben ming nian, the year in which the animal returns. Tradition calls it a year that runs hot and asks for care: big changes feel closer, and so do big opportunities. The custom is to wear red, keep habits steady, and avoid sudden large moves. It is a reason for care, not a sign of bad luck.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Horse and Goat are secret friends on the wheel, one of the six harmonies. Tradition reads 2027 as the gentler year after 2026: help arrives from people close to you, tension eases, and work feels less like a push. It is a good year to settle what the Fire Horse year shook loose.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
