Why 2018 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 16, 2018 in 2018. So the people born in 2018 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2018 to February 15, 2018 | Fire Rooster | 2017 (δΈι ) |
| February 16, 2018 to December 31, 2018 | Earth Dog | 2018 (ζζ) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 2018 is on a Friday, February 16, 2018, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 2, 2018. The Earth Dog year lasts 354 days, until February 4, 2019. The same sign and element came round in 1958 and come round again in 2078. A 2018 birthday turns 8 in 2026 and 9 in 2027. Before it came the Fire Rooster year, from January 28, 2017. After it comes the Earth Pig year, from February 5, 2019.

What sets 2018 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 2017. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 2018, 27 days earlier, so the Earth Dog year opens in Aquarius season.
46 days of 2018, from January 1 to February 15, 2018, still belong to the Fire Rooster year. The other 319 belong to the Earth Dog.
Chinese New Year came 12 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 12 days, from February 4, 2018 to February 15, 2018, the Chinese calendar still counts a Fire Rooster where a Five Elements chart already counts an Earth Dog.
03 Β· ELEMENT
What the Earth adds to the Dog
The Earth Dog is the most steadfast. Earth on Earth means patience, calm, and a strong sense of duty. It is dependable, and it is stubborn. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Earth and the Dog's own branch is Earth. Same element on both layers, so this Earth Dog is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Dog year has a different element, so an Earth Dog is not the same as the other Dogs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Dog guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Dog year before this one was 2006, a Fire Dog year that began on January 29, 2006. Chinese New Year was 18 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Fire to Earth. The Dog year after this one was 2030, a Metal Dog year that began on February 3, 2030. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Earth to Metal.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 2030 (Metal Dog), 2042 (Water Dog), 2054 (Wood Dog), 2066 (Fire Dog), 2078 (Earth Dog).
04 Β· THE SIGN
The Dog behind the Earth
The Dog's best matches are Tiger and Horse (triple harmony) and Rabbit (secret friend). Dragon sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for an Earth Dog
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to an Earth Dog, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Dog and Horse form a triple harmony with the Tiger, one of the strongest ties on the wheel. Tradition reads 2026 as a year of loyalty returned: friends step forward, partnerships work, and a long-held plan gets a tailwind. It is a good year to trust people you have been guarding against.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Dog and Goat form both a penalty tie, with the Ox, and a break tie. Tradition reads a year of friction in the details: contracts, commitments and promises need care, and a Dog that is quick to defend itself can make a small issue larger. Choose your fights, keep records, and let old matters rest.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
