Why 1946 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 2, 1946 in 1946. So the people born in 1946 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1946 to February 1, 1946 | Wood Rooster | 1945 (乙酉) |
| February 2, 1946 to December 31, 1946 | Fire Dog | 1946 (丙戌) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1946 is on a Saturday, February 2, 1946, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 16, 1946. The Fire Dog year lasts 354 days, until January 21, 1947. The same sign and element came round in 1886 and come round again in 2006. A 1946 birthday turns 80 in 2026 and 81 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Rooster year, from February 13, 1945. After it comes the Fire Pig year, from January 22, 1947.

What sets 1946 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 1945. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1946, 13 days earlier, so the Fire Dog year opens in Aquarius season.
32 days of 1946, from January 1 to February 1, 1946, still belong to the Wood Rooster year. The other 333 belong to the Fire Dog.
Chinese New Year came 2 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 2 days, from February 2, 1946 to February 3, 1946, the Chinese calendar counts a Fire Dog where a Five Elements chart still counts a Wood Rooster.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Fire adds to the Dog
The Fire Dog is the most passionate. Fire gives the Dog heat and a strong voice, so this Dog fights for what it believes in. It is brave, loud, and fiercely loyal. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Fire and the Dog's own branch is Earth. Fire feeds Earth in the cycle, so the element gives its energy to the animal. Traditionally that reads as generous and sometimes tiring: the element spends itself on the sign.
Every Dog year has a different element, so a Fire Dog is not the same as the other Dogs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Dog guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Dog year before this one was 1934, a Wood Dog year that began on February 14, 1934. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Wood to Fire. The Dog year after this one was 1958, an Earth Dog year that began on February 18, 1958. Chinese New Year was 16 days later then, and the element then moved on from Fire to Earth.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1958 (Earth Dog), 1970 (Metal Dog), 1982 (Water Dog), 1994 (Wood Dog), 2006 (Fire Dog).
04 · THE SIGN
The Dog behind the Fire
The Dog's best matches are Tiger and Horse (triple harmony) and Rabbit (secret friend). Dragon sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.
Strengths and blind spots, every compatible sign, and the full 2026 and 2027 reading are on the Dog guide.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Fire Dog
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Fire Dog, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Dog and Horse form a triple harmony with the Tiger, one of the strongest ties on the wheel. Tradition reads 2026 as a year of loyalty returned: friends step forward, partnerships work, and a long-held plan gets a tailwind. It is a good year to trust people you have been guarding against.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Dog and Goat form both a penalty tie, with the Ox, and a break tie. Tradition reads a year of friction in the details: contracts, commitments and promises need care, and a Dog that is quick to defend itself can make a small issue larger. Choose your fights, keep records, and let old matters rest.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
