01 Β· DATES
Why 1970 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 6, 1970 in 1970. So the people born in 1970 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1970 to February 5, 1970 | Earth Rooster | 1969 (ε·±ι ) |
| February 6, 1970 to December 31, 1970 | Metal Dog | 1970 (εΊζ) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1970 is on a Friday, February 6, 1970, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 20, 1970. The Metal Dog year lasts 355 days, until January 26, 1971. The same sign and element came round in 1910 and come round again in 2030. A 1970 birthday turns 56 in 2026 and 57 in 2027. Before it came the Earth Rooster year, from February 17, 1969. After it comes the Metal Pig year, from January 27, 1971.
02 Β· THIS YEAR
What sets 1970 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 1969. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1970, 17 days earlier, so the Metal Dog year opens in Aquarius season.
36 days of 1970, from January 1 to February 5, 1970, still belong to the Earth Rooster year. The other 329 belong to the Metal Dog.
Chinese New Year came 2 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 2 days, from February 4, 1970 to February 5, 1970, the Chinese calendar still counts an Earth Rooster where a Five Elements chart already counts a Metal Dog.
03 Β· ELEMENT
What the Metal adds to the Dog
The Metal Dog is the most principled. Metal adds discipline and firm standards, so this Dog holds to its code and expects others to do the same. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Metal and the Dog's own branch is Earth. Earth feeds Metal in the cycle, so the animal supports the year's element. Traditionally that is the easier mix: the sign backs the element.
Every Dog year has a different element, so a Metal Dog is not the same as the other Dogs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Dog guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Dog year before this one was 1958, an Earth Dog year that began on February 18, 1958. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Earth to Metal. The Dog year after this one was 1982, a Water Dog year that began on January 25, 1982. Chinese New Year was 12 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Metal to Water.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1982 (Water Dog), 1994 (Wood Dog), 2006 (Fire Dog), 2018 (Earth Dog), 2030 (Metal Dog).
04 Β· THE SIGN
The Dog behind the Metal
The Dog's best matches are Tiger and Horse (triple harmony) and Rabbit (secret friend). Dragon sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.
Strengths and blind spots, every compatible sign, and the full 2026 and 2027 reading are on the Dog guide.
05 Β· 2026 AND 2027
What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Metal Dog
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Metal Dog, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Dog and Horse form a triple harmony with the Tiger, one of the strongest ties on the wheel. Tradition reads 2026 as a year of loyalty returned: friends step forward, partnerships work, and a long-held plan gets a tailwind. It is a good year to trust people you have been guarding against.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Dog and Goat form both a penalty tie, with the Ox, and a break tie. Tradition reads a year of friction in the details: contracts, commitments and promises need care, and a Dog that is quick to defend itself can make a small issue larger. Choose your fights, keep records, and let old matters rest.
Element. Fire controls Metal in the cycle. Read it as pressure that tests and sharpens you, not as bad luck.
