Why 1965 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 2, 1965 in 1965. So the people born in 1965 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1965 to February 1, 1965 | Wood Dragon | 1964 (甲辰) |
| February 2, 1965 to December 31, 1965 | Wood Snake | 1965 (乙巳) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1965 is on a Tuesday, February 2, 1965, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 16, 1965. The Wood Snake year lasts 353 days, until January 20, 1966. The same sign and element came round in 1905 and come round again in 2025. A 1965 birthday turns 61 in 2026 and 62 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Dragon year, from February 13, 1964. After it comes the Fire Horse year, from January 21, 1966.

What sets 1965 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 1964. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1965, 13 days earlier, so the Wood Snake year opens in Aquarius season.
32 days of 1965, from January 1 to February 1, 1965, still belong to the Wood Dragon year. The other 333 belong to the Wood Snake.
Chinese New Year came 2 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 2 days, from February 2, 1965 to February 3, 1965, the Chinese calendar counts a Wood Snake where a Five Elements chart still counts a Wood Dragon.

What the Wood adds to the Snake
The Wood Snake is the most graceful. Wood adds warmth and creativity, so this Snake is artistic, charming, and better at friendship than the sign's reputation suggests. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Wood and the Snake's own branch is Fire. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so the element gives its energy to the animal. Traditionally that reads as generous and sometimes tiring: the element spends itself on the sign.
Every Snake year has a different element, so a Wood Snake is not the same as the other Snakes. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Snake guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Snake year before this one was 1953, a Water Snake year that began on February 14, 1953. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Water to Wood. The Snake year after this one was 1977, a Fire Snake year that began on February 18, 1977. Chinese New Year was 16 days later then, and the element then moved on from Wood to Fire.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1977 (Fire Snake), 1989 (Earth Snake), 2001 (Metal Snake), 2013 (Water Snake), 2025 (Wood Snake).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Wood Snake
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Wood Snake, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Snake and Horse have no special tie, but both are Fire signs, so the year doubles the Snake's own element. Tradition reads heat and drive: ambition runs high, so does the temper, and the Snake that stays composed gets the most from it. It suits bold work done quietly.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Snake and Goat have no special tie, and the Goat's Earth is fed by the Snake's Fire, which gives it a supportive tone. Tradition reads a smoother year than 2026: the Snake can rest, think, and choose a direction without pressure. It is a good year for study and for repairing relationships.
Element. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so you give more energy than you get back. Pace yourself.
