Why 1928 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 23, 1928 in 1928. So the people born in 1928 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1928 to January 22, 1928 | Fire Rabbit | 1927 (丁卯) |
| January 23, 1928 to December 31, 1928 | Earth Dragon | 1928 (戊辰) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1928 is on a Monday, January 23, 1928, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 6, 1928. The Earth Dragon year lasts 384 days, until February 9, 1929. The same sign and element came round in 1868 and come round again in 1988. A 1928 birthday turns 98 in 2026 and 99 in 2027. Before it came the Fire Rabbit year, from February 2, 1927. After it comes the Earth Snake year, from February 10, 1929. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.
02 · THIS YEAR
What sets 1928 apart
Chinese New Year came 10 days earlier on the calendar than in 1927. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1928, 2 days earlier, so the Earth Dragon year opens in Aquarius season.
22 days of 1928, from January 1 to January 22, 1928, still belong to the Fire Rabbit year. The other 344 belong to the Earth Dragon.
Chinese New Year came 12 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 12 days, from January 23, 1928 to February 3, 1928, the Chinese calendar counts an Earth Dragon where a Five Elements chart still counts a Fire Rabbit.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Earth adds to the Dragon
The Earth Dragon is the steadiest. The Dragon's own branch is Earth, so an Earth year stacks Earth on Earth: patient, practical, and more interested in results than applause. This is the Dragon that actually finishes the thing. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Earth and the Dragon's own branch is Earth. Same element on both layers, so this Earth Dragon is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Dragon year has a different element, so an Earth Dragon is not the same as the other Dragons. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Dragon guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Dragon year before this one was 1916, a Fire Dragon year that began on February 4, 1916. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Fire to Earth. The Dragon year after this one was 1940, a Metal Dragon year that began on February 8, 1940. Chinese New Year was 16 days later then, and the element then moved on from Earth to Metal.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1940 (Metal Dragon), 1952 (Water Dragon), 1964 (Wood Dragon), 1976 (Fire Dragon), 1988 (Earth Dragon).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for an Earth Dragon
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to an Earth Dragon, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Dragon and Horse have no special tie, so the year reads as neutral. The Horse's Fire feeds the Dragon's own Earth, which supports the sign. Tradition reads a steady, productive year: the Dragon sets the pace and the year does not get in the way.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Dragon and Goat have no special tie, and the year's Fire feeds the Dragon's own Earth. Tradition reads 2027 as a calm year for the Dragon, good for finishing what was started in 2026. Large moves go better when they are patient ones.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
