Why 1956 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 12, 1956 in 1956. So the people born in 1956 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1956 to February 11, 1956 | Wood Goat | 1955 (乙未) |
| February 12, 1956 to December 31, 1956 | Fire Monkey | 1956 (丙申) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1956 is on a Sunday, February 12, 1956, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 26, 1956. The Fire Monkey year lasts 354 days, until January 30, 1957. The same sign and element came round in 1896 and come round again in 2016. A 1956 birthday turns 70 in 2026 and 71 in 2027. Before it came the Wood Goat year, from January 24, 1955. After it comes the Fire Rooster year, from January 31, 1957.

What sets 1956 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 1955. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1956, 22 days earlier, so the Fire Monkey year opens in Aquarius season.
42 days of 1956, from January 1 to February 11, 1956, still belong to the Wood Goat year. The other 324 belong to the Fire Monkey.
Chinese New Year came 8 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 8 days, from February 4, 1956 to February 11, 1956, the Chinese calendar still counts a Wood Goat where a Five Elements chart already counts a Fire Monkey.

What the Fire adds to the Monkey
The Fire Monkey is the most dazzling. Fire gives the Monkey heat and charisma, so this Monkey is bold, funny, and magnetic. It also runs out of patience first. It is a Yang year (even), the outward, active side.
The year's stem is Fire and the Monkey's own branch is Metal. Fire controls Metal in the cycle, so the element presses on the animal. Traditionally that reads as a fire-driven Monkey that pushes against its own nature.
Every Monkey year has a different element, so a Fire Monkey is not the same as the other Monkeys. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Monkey guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Monkey year before this one was 1944, a Wood Monkey year that began on January 25, 1944. Chinese New Year was 18 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Wood to Fire. The Monkey year after this one was 1968, an Earth Monkey year that began on January 30, 1968. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Fire to Earth.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1968 (Earth Monkey), 1980 (Metal Monkey), 1992 (Water Monkey), 2004 (Wood Monkey), 2016 (Fire Monkey).

The Monkey behind the Fire
The Monkey's best matches are Rat and Dragon (triple harmony) and Snake (secret friend). Tiger sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Fire Monkey
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Fire Monkey, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Monkey and Horse have no special tie, but the Horse's Fire melts the Monkey's Metal in the cycle of control. Tradition reads pressure: work heats up, deadlines tighten, and the Monkey's quick mind is tested. The Monkey that picks one front and sticks to it handles the year well.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Monkey and Goat have no special tie, and the Goat's Earth feeds the Monkey's Metal, though the year's Fire is still a test. Tradition reads a milder year than 2026: pressure eases and the Monkey gets room to think. It suits steady building more than quick wins.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.

Your Annual Report
A Fire Monkey year is shared by a lot of people, and no two of them live it the same way. Your Annual Report reads your Five Elements and Western chart together, then draws your year as one curve. You can see the months that carry you forward, the ones that ask you to slow down, and how the year builds from January to December.
