Why 1987 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 29, 1987 in 1987. So the people born in 1987 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1987 to January 28, 1987 | Fire Tiger | 1986 (丙寅) |
| January 29, 1987 to December 31, 1987 | Fire Rabbit | 1987 (丁卯) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1987 is on a Thursday, January 29, 1987, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 12, 1987. The Fire Rabbit year lasts 384 days, until February 16, 1988. The same sign and element came round in 1927 and come round again in 2047. A 1987 birthday turns 39 in 2026 and 40 in 2027. Before it came the Fire Tiger year, from February 9, 1986. After it comes the Earth Dragon year, from February 17, 1988. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.
02 · THIS YEAR
What sets 1987 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 1986. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1987, 9 days earlier, so the Fire Rabbit year opens in Aquarius season.
28 days of 1987, from January 1 to January 28, 1987, still belong to the Fire Tiger year. The other 337 belong to the Fire Rabbit.
Chinese New Year came 6 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 6 days, from January 29, 1987 to February 3, 1987, the Chinese calendar counts a Fire Rabbit where a Five Elements chart still counts a Fire Tiger.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Fire adds to the Rabbit
The Fire Rabbit is the most expressive. Fire brings colour and nerve to a gentle sign, so this Rabbit speaks up, charms a crowd, and is more ambitious than it looks. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Fire and the Rabbit's own branch is Wood. Wood feeds Fire in the cycle, so the animal supports the year's element. Traditionally that is the easier mix: the sign backs the element.
Every Rabbit year has a different element, so a Fire Rabbit is not the same as the other Rabbits. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Rabbit guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Rabbit year before this one was 1975, a Wood Rabbit year that began on February 11, 1975. Chinese New Year was 13 days later then, and the element moved on from Wood to Fire. The Rabbit year after this one was 1999, an Earth Rabbit year that began on February 16, 1999. Chinese New Year was 18 days later then, and the element then moved on from Fire to Earth.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1999 (Earth Rabbit), 2011 (Metal Rabbit), 2023 (Water Rabbit), 2035 (Wood Rabbit), 2047 (Fire Rabbit).

The Rabbit behind the Fire

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Fire Rabbit
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Fire Rabbit, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Rabbit and Horse form a break tie, a crack in a plan rather than a collision. Tradition reads a year in which arrangements shift at the last minute: dates move, partners change their mind, and the Rabbit has to be flexible. Keep plans light, keep a back-up, and do not take a change of plan as a verdict on you.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Rabbit and Goat form a triple harmony with the Pig, one of the best ties a sign can have. Tradition reads 2027 as the Rabbit's year to feel at ease: friendships warm up, creative work flows, and help arrives from people who like you. It is a good year to make the move you have been weighing quietly.
Element. Both are Fire, so the year turns up the volume on what you already are.
