Why 1963 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was January 25, 1963 in 1963. So the people born in 1963 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1963 to January 24, 1963 | Water Tiger | 1962 (壬寅) |
| January 25, 1963 to December 31, 1963 | Water Rabbit | 1963 (癸卯) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1963 is on a Friday, January 25, 1963, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 8, 1963. The Water Rabbit year lasts 384 days, until February 12, 1964. The same sign and element came round in 1903 and come round again in 2023. A 1963 birthday turns 63 in 2026 and 64 in 2027. Before it came the Water Tiger year, from February 5, 1962. After it comes the Wood Dragon year, from February 13, 1964. It is a leap year in the Chinese calendar, with a thirteenth lunar month added.

What sets 1963 apart
Chinese New Year came 11 days earlier on the calendar than in 1962. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 21, 1963, 4 days earlier, so the Water Rabbit year opens in Aquarius season.
24 days of 1963, from January 1 to January 24, 1963, still belong to the Water Tiger year. The other 341 belong to the Water Rabbit.
Chinese New Year came 10 days before 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 10 days, from January 25, 1963 to February 3, 1963, the Chinese calendar counts a Water Rabbit where a Five Elements chart still counts a Water Tiger.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Water adds to the Rabbit
The Water Rabbit is the most intuitive. Water deepens the Rabbit's sensitivity, which means empathy, imagination, and a strong sense of timing. It feels the mood of a room before anyone speaks. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Water and the Rabbit's own branch is Wood. Water feeds Wood in the cycle, so the element gives its energy to the animal. Traditionally that reads as generous and sometimes tiring: the element spends itself on the sign.
Every Rabbit year has a different element, so a Water Rabbit is not the same as the other Rabbits. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Rabbit guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Rabbit year before this one was 1951, a Metal Rabbit year that began on February 6, 1951. Chinese New Year was 12 days later then, and the element moved on from Metal to Water. The Rabbit year after this one was 1975, a Wood Rabbit year that began on February 11, 1975. Chinese New Year was 17 days later then, and the element then moved on from Water to Wood.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1975 (Wood Rabbit), 1987 (Fire Rabbit), 1999 (Earth Rabbit), 2011 (Metal Rabbit), 2023 (Water Rabbit).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Water Rabbit
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Water Rabbit, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Rabbit and Horse form a break tie, a crack in a plan rather than a collision. Tradition reads a year in which arrangements shift at the last minute: dates move, partners change their mind, and the Rabbit has to be flexible. Keep plans light, keep a back-up, and do not take a change of plan as a verdict on you.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Rabbit and Goat form a triple harmony with the Pig, one of the best ties a sign can have. Tradition reads 2027 as the Rabbit's year to feel at ease: friendships warm up, creative work flows, and help arrives from people who like you. It is a good year to make the move you have been weighing quietly.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
