Why 1939 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 19, 1939 in 1939. So the people born in 1939 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1939 to February 18, 1939 | Earth Tiger | 1938 (戊寅) |
| February 19, 1939 to December 31, 1939 | Earth Rabbit | 1939 (己卯) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1939 is on a Sunday, February 19, 1939, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on March 5, 1939. The Earth Rabbit year lasts 354 days, until February 7, 1940. The same sign and element came round in 1879 and come round again in 1999. A 1939 birthday turns 87 in 2026 and 88 in 2027. Before it came the Earth Tiger year, from January 31, 1938. After it comes the Metal Dragon year, from February 8, 1940.

What sets 1939 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 1938. The Sun entered Pisces on the same day, so the Earth Rabbit year opens on the first day of Pisces season.
49 days of 1939, from January 1 to February 18, 1939, still belong to the Earth Tiger year. The other 316 belong to the Earth Rabbit.
Chinese New Year came 15 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 15 days, from February 4, 1939 to February 18, 1939, the Chinese calendar still counts an Earth Tiger where a Five Elements chart already counts an Earth Rabbit.

What the Earth adds to the Rabbit
The Earth Rabbit is the most dependable. Earth adds steadiness, so this Rabbit is the one people lean on. It is practical, cautious, and slow to be rushed. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Earth and the Rabbit's own branch is Wood. Wood controls Earth in the cycle, so the animal holds the element in check. Traditionally that reads as a Rabbit whose nature keeps the Earth in line.
Every Rabbit year has a different element, so an Earth Rabbit is not the same as the other Rabbits. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Rabbit guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Rabbit year before this one was 1927, a Fire Rabbit year that began on February 2, 1927. Chinese New Year was 17 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Fire to Earth. The Rabbit year after this one was 1951, a Metal Rabbit year that began on February 6, 1951. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Earth to Metal.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1951 (Metal Rabbit), 1963 (Water Rabbit), 1975 (Wood Rabbit), 1987 (Fire Rabbit), 1999 (Earth Rabbit).

What 2026 and 2027 mean for an Earth Rabbit
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to an Earth Rabbit, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Rabbit and Horse form a break tie, a crack in a plan rather than a collision. Tradition reads a year in which arrangements shift at the last minute: dates move, partners change their mind, and the Rabbit has to be flexible. Keep plans light, keep a back-up, and do not take a change of plan as a verdict on you.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Rabbit and Goat form a triple harmony with the Pig, one of the best ties a sign can have. Tradition reads 2027 as the Rabbit's year to feel at ease: friendships warm up, creative work flows, and help arrives from people who like you. It is a good year to make the move you have been weighing quietly.
Element. Fire feeds Earth in the Five Elements cycle, so the year tends to back you.
