Why 1983 has two signs
The Chinese year does not start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which was February 13, 1983 in 1983. So the people born in 1983 split across two animals.
| Born | Sign | Chinese year |
|---|---|---|
| January 1, 1983 to February 12, 1983 | Water Dog | 1982 (壬戌) |
| February 13, 1983 to December 31, 1983 | Water Pig | 1983 (癸亥) |
Dates follow the calendar in China. Five Elements (BaZi) charts change year at the start of spring, around 4 February, so a BaZi chart can give a different animal for an early-February birthday. See the Five Elements tool.
Chinese New Year 1983 is on a Sunday, February 13, 1983, and the Lantern Festival closes the celebration on February 27, 1983. The Water Pig year lasts 354 days, until February 1, 1984. The same sign and element came round in 1923 and come round again in 2043. A 1983 birthday turns 43 in 2026 and 44 in 2027. Before it came the Water Dog year, from January 25, 1982. After it comes the Wood Rat year, from February 2, 1984.

What sets 1983 apart
Chinese New Year came 19 days later on the calendar than in 1982. The Sun entered Aquarius on January 20, 1983, 24 days earlier, so the Water Pig year opens in Aquarius season.
43 days of 1983, from January 1 to February 12, 1983, still belong to the Water Dog year. The other 322 belong to the Water Pig.
Chinese New Year came 9 days after 4 February, the usual start of spring. For those 9 days, from February 4, 1983 to February 12, 1983, the Chinese calendar still counts a Water Dog where a Five Elements chart already counts a Water Pig.
03 · ELEMENT
What the Water adds to the Pig
The Water Pig is the most intuitive. Water on Water deepens the Pig's empathy and imagination. It is the most sensitive of the five, and the easiest to hurt. It is a Yin year (odd), the inward, quiet side.
The year's stem is Water and the Pig's own branch is Water. Same element on both layers, so this Water Pig is the purest of its kind: the element is doubled and the sign has nothing to soften it.
Every Pig year has a different element, so a Water Pig is not the same as the other Pigs. The cycle repeats every 60 years. Read the full Pig guide, or see all 12 signs and every year on the Chinese zodiac overview.
The Pig year before this one was 1971, a Metal Pig year that began on January 27, 1971. Chinese New Year was 17 days earlier then, and the element moved on from Metal to Water. The Pig year after this one was 1995, a Wood Pig year that began on January 31, 1995. Chinese New Year was 13 days earlier then, and the element then moved on from Water to Wood.
Your own year, the year your animal comes round again, repeats every 12 years: 1995 (Wood Pig), 2007 (Fire Pig), 2019 (Earth Pig), 2031 (Metal Pig), 2043 (Water Pig).
04 · THE SIGN
The Pig behind the Water
The Pig's best matches are Rabbit and Goat (triple harmony) and Tiger (secret friend). Snake sits opposite on the wheel and is the traditional clash.
Strengths and blind spots, every compatible sign, and the full 2026 and 2027 reading are on the Pig guide.

What 2026 and 2027 mean for a Water Pig
Every year carries its own animal and element. Here is how each one sits next to a Water Pig, read the traditional way. Treat it as something to think with, not a forecast.
2026
Fire Horse year
Animal. Pig and Horse have no special tie, but the Pig's Water meets the Horse's Fire head on. Tradition reads a year of tension between caution and pace: the world moves faster than the Pig likes. The Pig that keeps its own tempo and protects its rest finds the year easier than it looks.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
2027
Fire Goat year
Animal. Pig and Goat form a triple harmony with the Rabbit, one of the best ties on the wheel. Tradition reads 2027 as the Pig's year of ease: generosity is returned, relationships warm, and work finds a rhythm. It is a good year to build something for the long term.
Element. Water controls Fire in the cycle, so you hold the upper hand and can steer the year.
